The Recovery 4mat: a New Plan for Understanding and Recovering from Addiction

A Presentation by Chris Davidson

The nature of addiction is such that individuals will experience repeated failed attempts in abstinence before coming into treatment. From this a sense of shame and hopelessness can pervade, undermining the clients’ confidence for recovery. How can a helper evoke confidence and motivation in clients who are full of despondency and pessimism?

The Recovery 4mat offers a straightforward plan that leads the way out of their despair and provides a clear map towards recovery and a renewed optimism.

This presentation looks at the cyclical nature of addiction and how it plays out in reciprocation with mental health co-morbidity. Looking within and behind this chaos, The Recovery 4mat reveals the clear patterns of addiction, shows how this can be broken down and re-constructed into a simple, holistic and strength-based recovery plan that informs and guides an effective intervention.

The Presenter

Chris Davidson has specialised in addiction for 16 years, working in several rehab centres, related services and in private practice. He is currently the Therapy Team Leader for Gambling Solution, leading a team of therapists who work with gambling addicts and their families.

Chris has presented to the NSW Problem Gambling Counsellors Forum on three occasions, presenting therapeutic techniques and resources he developed for treating gambling addiction. He has developed a successful youth early intervention program on problem gambling that featured on ABC’s 7.30 Report, and an intervention program on addiction for Aboriginal men that has been running in rehab centres for the past eight years.

He is an accredited Clinical Supervisor for NSW Gambling Help Services, an advisor to the NSW Gambling Help Counsellors Workplace Development Committee and has addressed the Federal Senate on gaming machine harm minimisation.
