Crisis Counselling by PCA President Mr Grahame Smith
Crisis Counselling-Confronting, Essential and Doable
So what is a definition of a crisis- It is can be any situation where internal distress of a person is over impacted by events, where painful transitions or problems in living has escalated to the point where it is disabling a person’s ability to cope and function. The person in crisis may be at risk of self-injury or suicide and may sometimes pose a threat to others.
Thus clients who seek help often are in crisis in one form or another. It can be both confronting and stressful for the practitioner and the client. When the pressure is on and the stakes are high a simple repeatable and reliable approach is essential. Grahame Smith will provide insight into the dynamic of a client in crisis and how to help someone in crisis.
As part of this approach he will consider a series of questions that the counsellor can ask him or herself whether a person is in crisis or not and he will also examine 6 ways a practitioner can help mitigate the impacts of crisis.
Finally he will provide an opportunity for practitioners to use this simple model of crisis intervention during the presentation with a view of them feeling confident to apply it to every day counselling situations.
