Carol Crigg – Founder of Asperger Syndrome Partner Information Australia Inc. (ASPIA)

On Australia Day 2014 Carol was humbled but delighted to be awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia “for service to families affected by Asperger’s Syndrome”.

Carol had founded a support group “ASPIA Inc” in 2003 for the purpose of providing validation, information and support to partners of adults with Asperger’s Syndrome.  Receiving an OAM was so unexpected, as the passion to provide support to partners had just seemed to be a logical response to the explanation she had received in 2000 when her own husband was diagnosed with AS, after 17 years of relationship confusion and distress.

Carol is particularly passionate to advocate for partners, because included in most partners’ stories is the experience of not being believed by the therapists they’ve turned to, and in fact in many situations considerable harm has been done as well-meaning therapists inadvertently add to their sense of powerlessness and isolation.

Carol would like to present some information along the lines of “Insight from the Inside”, to give counsellors a little window into how this “hidden” disability can manifest in a relationship context, and how best to provide meaningful support for partners.

Carol completed a Diploma in Counselling in 2011, worked as a Generalist Counsellor in a rural health service from August 2011 to December 2015, and is currently providing private counselling for partners mostly by phone and skype.  Carol is also part-way through a Bachelor of Counselling.
